The Lamu Water Desalination Plant Project is a transformative initiative under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, aimed at addressing critical water supply challenges in the Lamu region and the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) corridor. The project involves the construction and installation of a state-of-the-art desalination plant with a capacity to produce 120,000 cubic liters of potable water per day. This reliable water supply will significantly improve access to clean drinking water for residents and support the growing demand from industrial and infrastructure developments in the region.
In addition to water purification, the plant integrates mineral recovery and commercial product sales, adding value and sustainability to the project’s economic model. With a 30-year contract term, the project is being implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation as the contracting authority. Valued at $106 million, the Lamu Desalination Plant represents a critical investment in water and sanitation infrastructure, contributing to public health, economic development, and regional integration under Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the broader LAPSSET initiative.
