The 40 MWp Kisumu Solar Plant, located in Kibos, Kisumu County, is a groundbreaking renewable energy initiative poised to significantly boost clean energy generation in Western Kenya. Upon completion, the plant is expected to produce approximately 105.3 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity in its first year of operation. This clean energy output will directly power homes, businesses, and institutions, helping to meet the energy needs of over 610,000 people in the county.

Beyond energy production, the project symbolizes Kisumu’s commitment to sustainable urban development. As the first of its kind in the region, the solar plant will play a central role in positioning Kisumu as Kenya’s first green city — setting a benchmark for renewable energy adoption and environmental leadership. It will also contribute to reducing carbon emissions, enhancing energy access, and supporting Kenya’s national goals under its Vision 2030 and clean energy transition framework.
